East of Silves.. and Beyond
The limestone area east of Silves presents us with yet another landscape to walk and explore. The imposing Rocha da Pena provides a panoramic view over the area. The nature reserve, known for its biodiversity, is home to a huge variety of animals and over 100 different species of bird. The most famous of these is the Bonnellis eagle, which have recently migrated to this area.
Dry stone walls and ancient olive trees line your path. Discover a rock wall thought to date back to the Iron Age. Majestic carob trees tower over the colourful plants and shrubs. Disused lime kilns and rusty water wheels stand like determined monuments to a way of life that has long since passed. Visit some of the many fontes, walk along meandering rivers, discover the wildlife that chooses these watery homes.
There are charming villages to visit, of which Alte is the best known. This picture postcard village has a maze of narrow cobbled streets, freshly painted houses and small interesting shops. The Fontes (springs) in Alte are a popular picnic area and a great place to relax after your walk. Take a swim in the freshwater pool or enjoy a traditional dish at one of the riverside restaurants. Visit the art gallery and or shop for hand painted pottery and other handicrafts. Sample local liquors and honey.
